Brussels may not sound like an obvious place to run a superyacht or business jet conference. Renowned for its chocolates, moules-frites, the Manneken Pis – or the Pissing Infant statue – modern-day Brussels is most famous for being the unofficial capital of the EU. Brussels is home to the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Council and the Council of Ministers. The headquarters of NATO are also located in Belgium`s capital and, should you need more convincing, British actress Audrey Hepburn was born there.
Against this illustrious backdrop, Quaynote ran the inaugural “Understanding Superyacht & Business Jet Tax”, a one-day conference at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, that drew attendees together from France, Spain, Portugal, Isle of Man, Malta, Greece, Monaco, Croatia and Belgium itself. While the location contrasted with other destinations that typically attract the superyacht or business jet crowds, Brussels proved to be easily accessible for an audience that travelled from various corners of Europe.

Superyacht stakeholders in Cyber Security Resilience are a bit like participants heading towards a potential family crisis.
On the one side of the partnership is the super yacht owner. Owning a super yacht is a luxury for the world’s financial elite due to the exorbitant cost of buying and maintaining one. It is a vessel for the super-rich.
On the other side are the people who run the vessel. They are usually well presented, hard-working, fit, healthy and discreet. They are not wealthy.
There are incompatibilities between the two. One has power and money. The others are chosen to be respectful, well-mannered and not to make a fuss.
There is a third party. Guests on Super yachts are what cybercriminals call high-value targets: A list personalities and influential wheeler dealers. All rich pickings in the world of extortion.

For anyone thinking of buying an airplane, one of the first things they may seek advice on is tax. Although this is understandable, there are other issues which U.S. buyers need to consider before they tackle the taxation side of things.
We spoke with David Norton, a leading U.S. aviation lawyer who owns and flies his own plane. “If you start with tax, I can almost guarantee that you are going to end up with a structure that the FAA considers to be a commercial operation, and if not done correctly will be viewed as an illegal charter operation,” he comments. Rather, Norton explains, the first question should always be, “Who is going to be the registered owner?” It`s worth knowing that you have to be a U.S. citizen to place title to your aircraft on the U.S. civil registry – and that the definition of who qualifies as a U.S. citizen for this purpose is very tight.

As a psychotherapist I deal with many of them, but the most impressive thing remains that, when that happens, I am in the presence of a TRAUMA that has wreaked havoc in someone’s life.
Regardless of how you want to call it and abbreviate it. If you, like me, watched the movie “American Sniper”, true story about U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, you may think that stress arising from the experience of traumatic events affects only war veterans or civilians involved in catastrophic accidents, measured according to the intensity of the event. So untrue.
In one of my roles, such as of psychological 1st responder, I have been involved in many situations that we may all agree to call tragic: from debriefing a yacht crew following the sudden death of a young crew member, to helping others to overcome the shock of witnessing a freak accident while manoeuvring, which cost one of their crew body mutilation. Or dealing with the guest who caused the accident whilst driving the wave runner, still unable to sleep and victim of panic attacks. Or the chef walking back to the yacht late at night and falling off the gangplank. And many others, all widely removed from any war related situation or catastrophe.
