Session Five: Buying a yacht: Commercial versus Private Use 14.00
Panel: Buying a yacht for commercial versus private use – what`s best?
Potential Owners are often confused about whether to buy a superyacht for commercial or personal use. Our expert panel, comprised of lawyers, flag representatives, a local surveyor and an international broker will weigh up the pros and cons of each option. They will tackle questions such as:
- How important is it for a prospective owner to take a decision as to what commercial coding standards the yacht should have in place right from the start, at time of acquisition, irrespective of whether the boat will actually be chartered or not?
- Is switching from pleasure to commercial status something quick in the case of second hand yachts that are not already ‘coded’?
- Production yachts are growing in size, but are the shipyards properly taking into account MLC when designing yachts?
- YET program as a model to be followed by other jurisdictions – attractive?;
- Do financiers / insurers play a big part in the decision making process of an owner when acquiring a yacht ?
- With the safety and construction norms from shipping being brought into commercial yachting, will the gap between private and commercial yachts get thinner?
- Are Owners more concerned about the asset they are acquiring from a financial/maintenance/ insurance point of view, and is the question as to possibility of coding a last one??
