With their undeniable beauty and coastlines ideally suited for yachting, why are the Greek islands not attracting more superyachts? Why is Greece not able to benefit from the much-needed tourism revenue that visiting superyachts would bring?

“We believe that tourism in Greece and in particular in Yachting has prospects for further growth,” said Michael Dunkerly, senior lawyer and manager of Tethys Equity and Oceda Yacht Agency”, speaking at the 1st Eastern Mediterranean Superyacht Forum taking place in Athens recently.

The conference discussed the need for an investment programme in marine tourism, particularly in marinas. But, despite the Greek government failing to make much-needed reforms to the country`s ailing economy, there is still some optimism amongst would-be investors about the prospects for its marine tourism sector. “For all those who are fortunate enough to spend time in Greece and the Greek islands, continues Michael Dunkerley, “they realize that nature has done an amazing job in creating a Yachting paradise. All we have to do is to “put the cherry on the cake.”

With Greece`s debt crisis and new refugee arrivals across the region unsteadying investor nerves, an over-riding issue affecting the superyacht sector is the onerous regulatory environment. “Greece unfortunately is subject to perhaps the most inane and unfriendly chartering rules for owners, charterers and the State itself. The regulations in place often deter yachts without a Greek commercial licence from chartering in our waters and where they do actually decide to come, unlike most EU States, there is no system in place to collect the VAT when such charters commence in Greek waters. A crazy loss of income for a country facing such serious economic problems” explains Jennifer Timinis, lawyer and managing director of Oceda.

According to others in the industry, however, the Greek government is taking these concerns seriously. Stavros Katsikadis, President of the Greek Marinas Association, addressing the East Mediterranean Superyacht Forum, indicated that the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs are both discussing lifting the ban on chartering of recreational vessels under a non-EU flag in Greece.

Other topics that were discussed at the event included Vassilis Fotilas from Fraser Yachts giving an overview of the Superyacht market today and Norma Trease moderating a brokers panel looking at the future for superyacht sales globally. In addition, Andrew Charlier from Ince & Co moderated a panel that compared the restrictions affecting Greece with those impacting other Jurisdictions.

For those keen to follow developments, the 2nd Eastern Mediterranean Superyacht Forum will take place on 31st May, 2018. “The second Forum will offer the best opportunity to see what changes have taken place one year on”, said Alison Singhal, Director at Quaynote Communications, co-organisers of the conference with Oceda. “Clearly growing Greece`s marine tourism sector to reach full potential is a work-in-progress”.

In a striking move of mutual business co-operation, a large number of Barcelona’s marine firms have come together to form a highly successful formal partnership that is helping them increase turnover from their international revenue streams.

This partnership, known as the Barcelona Clúster Nàutic, started just three years ago but now represents more than 80 companies, most of which are related to the superyacht sector.

The much anticipated conference Sustainability in the Marine Industry will explore recycling, life cycle assessment and how the supply chain, including designers, boatbuilders and manufacturers, can profitably adopt the circular
economy.

To be held at RAI Amsterdam on Monday 14 November – the day before METSTRADE begins –
Organisers of Sustainability in the Marine Industry (SIMI16) have added several high profile
speakers to the programme.

Paolo Bertetti, Operations Director for SANLORENZO, will share his company’s views and plans
for ‘cradle to grave’ construction and usage of yachts. Whilst Dr Jaap van der Woude,
Sustainability Committee Chairman of European Composites Industry Association (EuCIA), will
give an overview on progress in the recycling of composites, and the methodology of life cycle
assessment.
Jouko Huju CEO of Finnboat and Neil Chapman CEO of Boatshed.com, will give their views on
‘user demographics’, providing data and insights into the changes in ownership habits and
usage of leisure yachts – and how this plays into the sustainability discussion for the future of
our industry.
As already announced, Susie Tomson, Sustainability Manager for the Land Rover / BAR
America’s Cup race team, will share her findings on the work they have done and are
continuing to do in life cycle assessment and composite recycling at the team’s UK
Portsmouth base. In addition, the BLUE Marine Foundation will present details of their ocean
conservation/marine reserve projects around the world.

With Spain reporting an impressive upswing in the local chartering business, and new destinations becoming more accessible, the charter business is gearing up for more expansion. As opportunities emerge, so do new challenges, with port state control, the customs code and taxation issues raising causing concern amongst many industry players. As charter brokers, managers, corporate service providers and others seek clarification of regulatory changes, a new one-day conference will put the chartering, marinas and destinations under the spotlight.

The Future for Yacht Chartering takes place on 11th October, 2016, and is located appropriately at the stunning OneOcean Port Vell, in Barcelona, Spain. Jointly organised by Quaynote Communications and YachtMedia, the ‘Sustainability in the Marine Industry’ conference is powered by METSTRADE and technically supported by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA). The much anticipated Conference, which will be staged on the Monday before the 2016 METSTRADE, follows on from last year’s sell-out ‘Future of Yacht Recycling Conference’.

Currently Sustainability Manager at Land Rover BAR, Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup team, Susie Tomson has been an associate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (AIEMA) since 2008 and has a PhD in integrated coastal management (2001) from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Tomson established Earth to Ocean Ltd in 2009, delivering sustainability advice to major events, high performance teams and the construction sector. Her experience covers the Ryder Cup and Golf’s European Tour, the London 2012 Olympics, as well as the earlier British America’s Cup Challenge TeamOrigin. Sir Ben Ainslie and his team are investing in making all of their operations, including the recycling of their racing yachts, as environmentally sustainable as possible.

Getting to grips with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and carbon fibre recycling.
The Land Rover BAR AC team is supported by their exclusive Sustainability Partner 11th Hour Racing in their quest to challenge the traditional methods of yacht manufacturing and to plan for the end-of-life of their race boats. To achieve this they are developing a model to assess the costs and benefits, both environmental and financial, of different construction materials at the various stages of their life cycle. The AC yachts are built from carbon fibre, and the LCA study is being carried out simultaneously with a project to recycle carbon fibre from its resin composite to a reusable material. It is envisaged that the resulting process will offer a cleaner, more efficient and less energy consuming way to recycle the composite materials than presently known methods.

Tomson commented, “We are delighted to be a part of the Sustainability in the Marine Industry conference where we will present our findings; we are continuing with our work during 2016 and will have more to present by the time November comes around”.
